Idaho History Missionaries

Grade: 4

*This is a lesson I taught as part of an instructional sequence during my student teaching internship.

1. Using the provided textbook, as well as the power point presentation (Integrating Technology), read and discuss the information about the missionaries that came to Idaho.

2. As you read, fill in the graphic organizer with as many details as possible.

3. Review and check for understanding.

4. Give each student a piece of construction paper and the picture with the state outline and missionary logo. Have the students fold the construction paper into a brochure and decorate the front as desired. (Integrating Art).

5. Now give each student a picture page of all the missionaries and scraps of construction paper. Have the students glue pictures to rectangles of paper, write the missionaries names, then write a description of each missionary.

*For below-level students, allow them to write shorter descriptions. Have correct spellings of names available.

Idaho Missionary Challenge Game

Grade: 4

*This is a review activity I made and had the students complete as part of an instructional sequence during my student teaching internship.

1. Make sure to schedule the computer lab ahead of time. Also, load this power point game onto each computer, and make sure it works before the students arrive.

2. Have each student complete this review activity about the missionaries that came to Idaho. Each slide on the power point has a question and possible answers. The students click on an answer and the computer will tell them if they are correct or incorrect. (Incorporation of Technology).

*Make sure to read the question with below-level readers whenever possible.

What should I wear?

Grade: 1

*This is a lesson I taught to first grade students as part of an instructional sequence during my student teaching pre-internship.

1. Read Froggy Gets Dressed by Jonathan London.

2. Use the clothing power point slide from the four seasons power point presentation to teach that we wear different clothing for each season.

3. Use the clothing cards, to guide the students through deciding which clothes are appropriate for which seasons. This is also modeling for their upcoming worksheet.

4. Have the students complete the clothing worksheet, then go over as a class.

5. Review and question the students to check for understanding.

6. Have the students complete the clothing page in their four seasons book. For below-level writers, have the words pre-traced for them.

7. While the students are completing their season books, have the rotate through the computers completing the “What Will Bella Wear?” online activity. (Integration of technology)http://www.storyplace.org/preschool/activities/bellawear.asp

Amazing Animal Speed

Grades: 1-6

* This is a leeson I taught to first through sixth grade students as part of a weeklong science camp.

1. Have each student use the internet to read about one of the fastest land animals, specifically finding a speed (Technology Integration).

    • Cheetah, Pronghorn, Wildebeest, Lion, Gazelle, Elk, Cape Hunting Dog, Coyote, Hyena, Zebra, Warthog, Grizzly Bear

2. Have each student write their animal's speed on the chalk or white board.

3. Take each animal's speed and mark this on the comparison chart (Math Integration).

4. Discuss; specifically comparing and contrasting.

* Enhancement: To challenge above-level students, have them convert how many miles an hour an animal runs into feet per so many seconds. Then measure this length on the floor and let the students try to run this length in the specified amount of time.

A Bug’s Life: Eating

Grades: 1-6

* This is a lesson I taught to first through sixth grade students as part of a weeklong science camp.

1. Discuss that insects have various mouths in order to consume food. Show pictures as possible or look at using a microscope or magnifying glass and various insects.

  • sucker – straw or needle (Mosquito)
  • chewer – clothespin (Beetle, Ants)
  • absorber – sponge (End of butterfly proboscis)
  • proboscis – party blower (Butterfly)

2. Have stations set up that the students will rotate through in order to try to consume food as different insects do.

  • Clothespins, beans
  • Sponges, small glasses of water
  • straws, small glasses of water
  • party blowers with Velcro on end, paper flowers with Velcro

3. Have the students pick their favorite insect. Allow them time to explore the internet (integrating technology) to discover what kind of mouth that insect has. I have a page that has a list of a few website they may visit to find the information.

4. Have the students use various art supplies to create the insect on a sheet of black construction paper (integrating art). Their insect must have the correct mouth.
